Demand for tech talent set to explode

As tech recruitment consultants, it looks like we’ve got our work cut out for the next couple of years. Oh yes, tech employment is predicted to grow by 37,000 positions this year alone, that’s a 1.5% increase over 2020.

In truth, we’d anticipated tech to be a growth area, and since the start of the year we’ve had our hands full – not complaining!

The pandemic was what did it – employers recognised how important tech was not only to business continuity but also to long-term growth and success.

The uptick in demand for tech talent is also due to businesses becoming more aware of cyber threats of course. The growing reliance on technology has inevitably opened up more doors for cyber-criminals to weasel their way into companies’ networks – so businesses have been on the lookout for talented techies who can help combat that threat.

Demand is only going one way

It all adds up to a demand for tech skills that has never been higher – and it’s only going to get more intense.

While it’s going to make our working lives at Revoco very busy (and that’s a good thing because we love what we do), it’s undoubtedly good for the economy too.

The 282,000 tech firms in the UK generated £101.8 billion in direct economic impact last year.

Right now, tech workers account for 7.6% of the total UK workforce, with 2.5 million people employed in technology positions. But just watch that percentage explode over the next couple of years.

Employment growth is projected in 12 of the 13 metropolitan markets included in CompTIA’s UK Tech Industry and Workforce Trends report – have a read for yourself here. While London might be dominating the tech scene to some extent, Manchester, Birmingham and our beloved Bristol are booming right now as well.

Employers are increasingly on the hunt for people with skills in emerging technologies. One in five job postings in 2020 were for positions with skills in artificial intelligence, automation, blockchain and internet of things.

Does that sound like you? If so, there’s never been a better time to make your next move.
