Four top trends in ERP software

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is benefiting companies across all sectors, though retail remains one of its largest users. The software allows retailers to integrate operations and streamline processes. As vendors continue to perfect their offering, a TechWorm article outlines some of the changes we can expect to see this year and beyond.

More retailers adopt cloud-based ERP software

Retailers are increasingly accepting of cloud technology and its benefits, so vendors are now turning their attention to creating efficient, cloud-based ERP software. When based in the cloud, ERP brings advantages in the form of enhanced scalability, security and support, with the market expected to be worth around $25.6bn (£18.3bn) by 2020.

Increasing rollout among small businesses

ERP software vendors have long focused on developing systems for larger organisations, with small and medium-sized businesses missing out. But that’s changing, with vendors looking to add functions and capabilities that cater to small business’ bespoke needs. This is the same for retailers operating in niche industries, like food and pharmaceuticals.

Legacy systems fall out of favour

Many retailers are still using outdated legacy ERP systems yet this is becoming less common, spurred by the move to the cloud. Many software vendors have in fact ceased offering long-term support for legacy systems, or adding new functions to them. Instead, they are focusing on omnichannel ERP systems where retailers can view connections across various aspects of business management. This approach is allowing businesses to create a more streamlined purchasing journey, while guaranteeing a unified communication process.

A greater push for mobile ERP

With more retail staff working outside of the office, there will be a big push for software vendors to devise flexible and efficient mobile ERP solutions. Such solutions mean that employees can access the information they need in real-time, and collaborate with colleagues, on the move. It will become increasingly vital for ERP systems to feature functions which enable employees to access critical information – such as billing and shipping details – using their smartphones or tablets.

For Retailers, it’s crucial that they’re able to stay on top of software trends and adapt to changes in the market when they occur. If you’ve got experience in this fast paced sector and want to work for forward-thinking brands, take a look at our vacancies today.
